And They're Off!
The Real Deal
I started my 14th season of photographing local high school sports this week as teams started playing against real opponents in games that count. As usual, golf and tennis were the first to get underway to take advantage of good early season weather. I attended the Traverse City Central Summer Splash quad meet as well as a match at Traverse City West where the Titans took on Holly.
The two day Lober Invitational golf tournament at the Grand Traverse Resort featured nearly 40 teams from all around the state, including many of the local teams.
TC West boys soccer entertained their counterparts from Midland to open their campaign.
And finally TC Central hosted their annual season opening volleyball tournament with 12 entries that included teams from such areas as Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Midland.
The local teams fared well in all the events I covered. Traverse City Central boys tennis was victorious in its own quad meet and the Titans from TC West defeated Holly after winning a tournament in Saginaw.
The girls golf teams, although not challenging the winners, did well in their divisions.
Titan soccer swept Midland, winning the JV match 3-0 and easily dominating the varsity match 5-1.
In volleyball, three local teams made it to the gold championship bracket including Traverse City St. Francis, Elk Rapids, and the host Trojans. In fact, the Central squad was a point away from winning their semi-final match before falling just short of playing for the championship.
The Final Pieces
This week the three remaining fall sports that I photograph get started with the football season getting underway,a big cross country meet on tap at Benzie Central, and a swim meet. There is also more golf, soccer, and volleyball to attend.
